Playa del Carmen is a beautiful Mexican Caribbean town on the mainland beach across the Caribbean from Cozumel. Playa del Carmen has long been a favorite destination for European tourists and American retirees. In the past 5 years it has been discovered by discriminating travelers from around the world and Playa del Carmen has blossomed into a prime destination for both year round vacation travel and longer term winter stays for "snowbirds."

Playa del Carmen is the heart of the Mayan Riviera, a string of beaches and attractions along Mexico's Caribbean coast. It is close to the Mayan Riviera's cultural and natural wonders. Amazing Mayan sites such as the Tulum Mayan ruins, the Coba Mayan ruins, and the famous Chichen Itza Mayan ruins are all a short distance from Playa del Carmen. Natural wonders abound in this part of Mexico. Visitors can swim and dive in clear cenote fresh water pools, or the warm blue Caribbean waters. The reefs between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen make for world class ocean diving or excellent snorkeling. Both diving and snorkeling are available at various eco parks which make Mexico's hidden natural beauty accessible to anyone.

Although Playa del Carmen still has a safe, small town feel, it has the advantage of being a popular international tourist destination. Playa del Carmen's famous Quinta Avenida shopping and dining district has much to offer year round. There are restaurants of every type from local seafood places to French bakeries to elegant Italian restaurants. One favorite is Don Emilione Restaurant which offers unique cocktails and appetizers, delicious deserts, and wonderful vegetarian, Mexican and Italian entrees. The shops also run the full range from small handicraft stores to upscale international chains.

Playa del Carmen has a large population of people from all over the world. This international community has brought many unusual services and amenities to Playa del Carmen. There is a golf course, large grocery stores, specialty import grocery stores, multi-lingual schools, various churches and more.

Plus Cancun is just 45 minutes away from Playa del Carmen. Cancun has everything you could want including Sam's, Costco, car dealerships, American Express, US chain restaurants like TGI Friday's and Tony Roma's, and several large modern malls. Most importantly, Cancun has an international airport - you can fly to Miami in an hour and Houston in an hour and a half. Flights from Cancun to the US are close, easy, and generally inexpensive.
